OPEN GARDENS AT SHERFORD THIS JUNE
On Sunday 9th June, between 2-5pm, the Friends of Sherford Country Park will be holding an open garden event. This community event will also feature a plant sale and alfresco cream tea.
For Sherford residents, there are several ways to get involved:
Open your garden up!
Donate plants that you have grown for the plant sale;
Bake a cake or help in the tea room
The Friends of Sherford Country Park say of the event, "This is not a competition. It is a chance for us as a community to learn from one another, especially the new people moving in. For them to see what grows well and what does not and to be encouraged to create a garden in their new homes. The result will be a rich diverse environment to pass on to future generations."

Sherford has welcomed a new vicar, to lead the new town’s Church of England congregation. Greg Bakker has taken over the post – in an interim capacity – to lead Sherford Community Church.
Greg has lost no time in getting to know people in the community. He has been working with Sherford Vale School and the House of Brews to offer a number of mothers and carers a free cup of coffee as part of the Mother’s Day celebrations. On Tuesday (5th March) and Wednesday (6th March) Mrs Evans took the opportunity to join Greg and his team handing out cards to many of the mothers and carers of children attending the school offering them a free coffee to say thank you to them for all they do bringing up their children.
Greg has had a really warm and friendly welcome from residents. He commented, “It is really lovely to be part of the Sherford community and I am very much look forward to working with the school and joining in community activities alongside helping to nurture an open and engaged church here in Sherford.”
Mrs Susie Evans, Head Teacher said, ‘It is very important for the school and church to work together as both institutions are at the heart of the community. Greg is very is open and welcoming and has taken the initiative to show how thankful the community is to mothers and carers for all that they do to nurture their children.’
Greg originally hails from California, some distance from his current Plymouth posting! He supports churches as they adapt to be more outwardly focused: based on his considerable experience, he is well placed to support the growing community of Sherford.
There are plenty of opportunities – for those living within and outside of Sherford – to get involved in events run by the church in the coming weeks:
• On Mothering Sunday (10th March) everyone is invited to this special service at 10 am with coffee and cakes. With crafts, prayers, and the giving of flowers: it will be a great way to say thank you to mums, carers, and all are nurturing or have nurtured children and young people.
• At Easter there will be a Muddy Church in Sherford Country Park on Good Friday, 29th March at 10.30am. And on Easter Day (31st) there will be a ‘Sunrise Service’ in the Country Park.
• On 6th April the church will be supporting the community’s Sherford Celebration.
• There will be an ‘agape’ family lunch for everyone on Sunday 11th April as part of the usual morning service.
Sherford Community Church runs regular Sunday services, small Bible groups, a children’s ministry. There is also a popular baby and toddler group which meets every Wednesday at 9.30am in the Sherford Community Hub. Find out more at www.sherfordchurch.net

Have you heard about Volunteer Community Days? These are days when your employer can free you to volunteer to help your community by joining an approved group near you whilst still being paid.
Clarion is one of the companies involved in Sherford and they have added the Friends of Sherford Country park to their list of approved organisations for this scheme. They will become the first company to send their employees to help with a project in the Country Park at Sherford.
On October 6th the Country Park Group is expecting to welcome a group of volunteers to help progress the project around the stream area. The aim of this project is to clear the vegetation from around the stream, reinstate the pool and create a wetland where a wide variety of wildlife can find new homes. There have already been sightings of frogs and dragon flies around the stream which is a sure sign that they will come back with the environment improvement envisaged. The Group has also been given a grant by Wild About Devon to plant the stream side with species suitable for the environment.
Now the Group can look forward to being able to make a big push on this project with the help of this band of volunteers from Clarion.
Why not ask about the Community Volunteer Day scheme where you work and come and join in working to improve the environment in your local country park?

The Sherford community has cause to celebrate, with its first ever resident marking their fifth anniversary of moving to the new town as its founding member. A day of commemorative activities took place to celebrate the growing community, the groups that have formed and to mark its past, present and future.
A tree planting ceremony was held, with Councillor Dan Brown - Ward Councillor for Wembury and Brixton - officiating alongside South Hams District Council's Green Infrastructure Officer. Scots Pine trees were planted during the event in Sherford's Country Park; an area that will eventually span a colossal 500-acres of open green space.
The celebration was run by some of Sherford's active social groups, including the Community Church, Over 50s club and Friends of Sherford Country Park. The Friends group is RHS affiliated and includes 25 households from within the old and new parts of the community. It undertakes projects within the expansive public green space, enables members to mix and enjoy the outdoors and encourages everyone to work together for the common good.
The Friends of the Country Park group marked her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee year by planting a further seven trees - one for each decade on the throne - as part of the Queen's Green Canopy initiative which is running across the country to increase native tree cover as a 'special gift' for the Queen. These trees were funded by the Sherford Community Trust along with the community celebrations, refreshments and a plant sale which was held at the hub later in the day.

To help spread seasonal cheer throughout the community, a bauble decorating competition took place at Sherford this month, with hundreds of children and their families decorating baubles and hanging their colourful creations on the town Christmas tree.
A bit of festive fun, organised by the Sherford Community Trust and Vistry Partnerships – part of the Sherford Consortium – this was the first ever ‘Sherford Christmas Bauble Competition’ and the town enthusiastically got behind it, ensuring the tree was festooned with handcrafted masterpieces!
Judy Talbot, Community Coordinator from the Sherford Community Trust, had a hard task of picking two winning baubles – but creations by one of the youngest members of Sherford Vale infants and one of the eldest juniors especially caught her eye for their colourful and imaginative designs.
Staff and pupils from Sherford Vale School helped mark the occasion, dressing in festive finery and delivering plenty of Christmas spirit! To continue the fun, families have been encouraged to take their baubles home in time for Christmas, keep hold of them and reuse in the future!
